You will not please everyone. New Toyota RAV4
Designers RAV4, it seems, really finally dismissed – in the sense, not home, but emotionally and documented. How else to explain the fact that the concept of FT-AC, shown last year, turned out to be almost an exact copy of the production model? Yes, with such an approach, it is unlikely that it will be possible to make housewives sit in RAV4 – but almost all the other “target groups” are unlikely to remain dissatisfied. Well, the Japanese are trying to delight the eye with gloss and gloss lovers with an exterior finish, which, however, is somewhat discordant with the image of the “space explorer”.
The bright image accompanies the logical transition of the model to the new GA-K platform of the TNGA architecture: this is exactly what makes the RAV4 related to the Camry, and at the same time to the Avalon and Lexus ES. However, this does not mean an absolute technical relationship – the machines simply scale according to a similar principle. There is 13 centimeters less space between the axles than the Camry, but 3 centimeters more than the old RAV4 – 2,690 millimeters.
True, the geometry here is somewhat unconventional: usually, manufacturers report an increase in the wheelbase in parallel with the total length, and at the same time the growth of the stock for passengers and baggage. Here everything is nonlinear in Japanese. The base has become 3 centimeters more, and the total length is 5 millimeters less. The rear overhang is 30 millimeters shorter, and the trunk is 79 liters more (626 liters). The ground clearance is 15 millimeters more, and the gap between the driver’s buttocks and the road is the same as it was: the seat was lowered to the same 15 millimeters. Fortunately, not all the figures are so heterogeneous: body rigidity increased by 57% high-strength steels – and there is nothing to oppose to this.
To increase the rigidity of the body can only add thought, which has recently become one of the leitmotifs of the development of machines. “More fun to drive” – this phrase comes from the mouth of Toyoda-san himself, and the company is not only developing a new Supra for this company, along with BMW, but also fitting new serial cars. No, RAV4, of course, didn’t become any driver’s car – but common values like the same body rigidity, lowering of the center of gravity and weight distribution, which could be laid at 51:49, still did not prevent anyone, including off-road. And at the same time, in the new RAV4, the electric power steering motor was transferred from the steering column to the rail (the trend is quite popular – just, for example, they operate in Hyundai and Kia) to make the response and feedback more transparent and accurate. In general, even the same Camry is still far away, but there is a sense in the work done.
Suspensions have not undergone radical changes: MacPherson in front, rear – independent scheme with double wishbones. Behind, they only revised the points of attachment of the trailing arms and changed the scheme of attachment of shock absorbers: now they stand more upright. In general, the suspension made a little softer: according to the Japanese, this is the merit of the notorious increase in body rigidity and lowering the center of gravity.
The list of powertrains causes moderate optimism: a two-liter engine paired with a variator or mechanics is among the European options, and a 2.5-liter engine with a new eight-speed automatic instead of a six-speed one is on the American list. Against this background, you can not worry about the fact that the main rate and there, and there it is made on a hybrid version, combining a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a CVT. She, however, has a promising all-wheel drive system with a separate electric motor on the rear axle, which pushes the moment to the rear wheels if necessary. However, the “normal” version with the multi-plate clutch of the rear wheel drive usually gives enough confidence to its owners.
Well, it is for sure that non-hybrid cars will come to us: a pair of two-liter 3ZR-FE and a variator obviously underwent a minimum of changes, but the 2.5-liter engine is new. This unit is from the Dynamic Force family – its two-liter relative is installed, for example, on a Lexus UX. Here, we recall the high thermal efficiency of 40%, combined injection (distributed plus direct) and optimized cylinder blowing by changing the angle between the intake and exhaust valves, increasing the diameter of the valves themselves, as well as a more gentle intake channel. But with all this, the engine is atmospheric – and for most buyers this will be a simpler and more important argument than some fine tuning of the intake and injection. But the promised disappearance of a diesel engine will definitely be unpleasant for many: Toyota rejects them in the passenger line, up to and including RAV4.
Well, okay, let’s better about the good – about the salon, for example. There is not such a riot of forms, as outside, but added distinctiveness – although it didn’t do without beaten solutions like a protruding tablet on top of the front panel.
